		<description>The title suggests that those in defiance, the colonial merchants, considered Britain to be an empire, which by any reasonable standard, it was. Most historians refer to the period of 1583–1783 as the &quot;First British Empire.&quot; The French and Indian Wars helped expand the territory controlled by Britain at the same time that the British East India Company consolidated its control over India. Sure looks like and empire to me.</description>

		<description>Not at all such that the the &quot;Defying the Empire&quot; part of the title is accurate . Did the British really see themselves as Imperialists at this point in history ? Did not the concept of Empire come later .
