Sir Francis Chichester and Gypsy Moth IV
1967: Sir Francis Chichester sails home
Forty two years ago this week Sir Francis Chichester arrived back in Plymouth in his yacht, Gypsy Moth IV, after completing an epic single-handed voyage around the world. He crossed the finishing line at 2058, nine months and one day after setting off from the historic port. Sir Francis was the first man [...]

Tough First Week in the OSTAR 2009 Race
The forty-ninth Original Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race (OSTAR) began last Monday with 31 competitors sailing from Plymouth, England bound for Newport, Rhode Island. The sailors ranged in age from 18 to 68 and hailed from seven countries. The fleet immediately hit bad weather and heavy seas. Five boats, including the two trimarans in the race, have pulled out of the [...]

From a Lifeboat to the Silver Screen
After being held captive by Somali pirates in a Maersk Alabama lifeboat, Captain Phillips is now being pursued by Hollywood. While we having no further word on Captain Richard Phillip’s book deal, Sony/Columbia Pictures has acquired the rights to Captain Phillip’s story and an impressive team of producers has been lined up to work on the project, [...]

Phil Bolger 1927-2009
Phil Bolger 1927-2009
I am deeply saddened by Phil Bolger’s death, both the event and the circumstances. He was no war hero, merely a yacht designer of remarkable and highly idosyncratic abilities. He designed beautiful boats but was never afraid to design ugly ones as well, to test out a new idea or retry an [...]

Submarine USS Growler Reopens at Intrepid Museum
The USS Growler reopened last week at the Intrepid Air and Space Museum on the Hudson River in Manhattan. The reports, usually buried in accounts of the various events during New York Fleet Week invariably referred to the vessel as the ”Growler nuclear submarine” or the “Growler , a retired nuclear submarine“. The Growler is not a [...]

Sinking the USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg
Yesterday, the USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg sank beneath the waves off the Florida Coast near Key West on its way to becoming the second largest intentionally sunk artificial reef in the world. The Vandenberg has had a varied and fascinating history.

Kayaking at Cape Chignecto Provincial Park in Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia
I am seriously jonesing to get my kayaks back into the water and do some paddling. This clip, which I saw on the Bay of Fundy Blog , only made the urge stronger. The kayaking in Cape Chignecto Provincial Park looks fantastic. Nova Shores Adventures looks like it runs some wonderful trips.

Model Guardians of a Small but Proud Fleet
From the Washington Post:
Model Guardians of a Small but Proud Fleet
Dana Wegner has the last drafting table in the U.S. Navy. Just think of all the ships that have been designed on it: the battleships and aircraft carriers, the amphibious landing craft and fully rigged men-of-war.
Dana is the curator of the Department of Navy Ship [...]

Update: The Onrust Project – Launching
Back in February we posted about the recreation of Adriaen Block’s sloop, Onrust in Adriaen Block, the Tijger, the Onrust and the IRT Subway Tunnel. The folks at the Onrust Project in Rotterdam Junction, NY have painstaking recreated a replica of Adriaen Block’s sloop on which he explored the Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts coasts as far [...]

Update: The Tijger and the IRT Subway Tunnel, or maybe not
In our previous post, Adriaen Block, the Tijger, the Onrust and the IRT Subway Tunnel, we noted that in 1916, James Kelly, an amateur historian who would later became the official Brooklyn County historian, believed that the remains of Adriaen Block’s ship Tijger may have been found in a New York subway tunnel. Kelly had been the supervising [...]
