Blackwater Anti-Piracy Patrol Scuttled by Lawsuits – New Coast Guard Regulations
Two bits of news from late last week, which have little in common except that they involve piracy. Blackwater, the notorious merc shop which has now been renamed Xe, thought it would cash in on the anti-piracy business but only managed to get itself tangled up in lawsuits over their own abusive and boorish behavior. What a shock.
Blackwater’s Pirate-Fighting Ops Sunk After Discrimination Suits
Elsewhere the US Coast Guard has now issued Maritime Security Directive 104-6 which requires US flag ships to do what they are essentially already doing when transiting pirate infested waters. US operators will now be required to have a vessel security plan approved by the U.S. Coast Guard
To its credit, Maersk Lines has already developed its own security plans and procedures for quite some time now. I am not sure what plans Liberty Maritime Corp. has in place but the officers and crew of the Liberty Sun did all the right things they were attacked by and successfully escaped from pirates last month. Perhaps if all else fails the crews under attack will be now able to throw the new US Coast Guard approved “Vessel Security Plan” at the pirates in addition to the other measures they would already take to resist boarding by pirates.
