The Queen of the Grand Banks Schooners

May 25, 2009 · Filed Under History, Lore of the Sea, Ships, Songs

I happened upon this amazing video – rare footage of the Canadian fishing schooner Bluenose from Nova Scotia, racing against the  Gertrude L. Thibault of Gloucester, set to Stan Roger’s song, Bluenose.   Definitely worth a look and listen.

The Bluenose lives on in her replica, Bluenose II, as well as appearing on the Canadian dime, Nova Scotia license plates and having made an appearance on three sets of postage stamps.  It is easy to see why she has not been forgotten.  See also The Bluenose Legacy.

I understand that the film was shot in the autmn of 1938. It was the last International Fisherman’s Cup Race between the Bluenose and the Gertrude E. Thebaud sailing off Gloucester and Boston.

MY,MY,MY!!!She did’nt win ‘em all though. She and her competitors where no less than majesticaly magnificent. The short clip leaves so thankful because all of my spare time is spent reading and researching this subject matter.I have stood my share of wheel watches in nice warm pilot houses, and can only imagine what it would be like to stand at the wheel in the worst weather on this planet in the open. When men really were men,on the greyhounds of the sea.

What a wonderful piece of History. When real sailors
were men of the sea compaired to the soft belley sailors of today who depend on winches , electronics , hydralics , and cell phones to call for help.

My hat is off to “The IRON MEN and WOODEN VESSELS”.
