RMS St Helena to visit Tristan Da Cunha

July 9, 2009 · Filed Under Current, Lore of the Sea, Ships

Tristan da Cunha is a remote volcanic group of islands in the south Atlantic Ocean. It is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, lying 2,816 kilometres (1,750 mi) from the nearest land, South Africa, and 3,360 kilometres (2,090 mi) from South America.

In 1961 a volcanic eruption forced evacuation of the entire island to the UK .  (Most islanders returned a few later later.) The Royal Mail Ship St Helena will make a special visit to Tristan da Cuhna in January 2011 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the evacuation of the island.  Departing 25th January 2011 from Cape Town the ship will arrive at the remote island on 30th January where she will spend 3 day before sailing to St Helena for 2 days and then returning to Cape Town, arriving on 13th February. Spaces on the ships are nearly sold out but a few cabins remain available. Click here to learn more.

This is a very unique place, one might even say rather strange. I have passed by the island on a passage from South Africa to Argentina. Never landed there or made contact. I did meet some of the islanders during their evacuation stay at Calshot, Hampshire, England. The local government recently opened a new website at http://www.tristan-da-cunha.com visit to find out their details. Cruise ships are beginning to call there but landing is politically complicated and physically difficult.
    Good Watch

I stopped at the island in December 2004 while onboard the cruiseship Royal Princess. The landing conditions were such that we could not disembark.

However a zodiac full of Tristinians came aboard. They set up stalls in one of the lounges and sold some of their local wares.

One of them gave a very interesting lecture about life on the island. After a few hours they packed up and headed back to the island. We steamed off to the Falkland Islands.

It certainly is an interesting and unique place.

    Steve.
