Happy Navy’s Birthday, not to be Confused with Navy Day….

October 13, 2009 · Filed Under Current, History, Lore of the Sea

navyHappy US Navy’s  Birthday to one and all. October 13th is official celebration of the US Navy’s Birthday, which should not be confused with the Navy Day on October 27th, nor the anniversary of the founding of the US Navy on March 27th.   Then again there is a “Navy Day in DC” which is celebrated on October 11th. Please don’t ask me why.

It is OK to be confused. The Gray Stack line is like that.  See our previous post from last March, which explains it all more or less.

Happy Anniversary of the Founding of the US Navy, not to be Confused with the Navy’s Birthday or Navy Day

If the dates aren’t confusing enough, there are at least four locations which claim to the “birthplace of the US Navy.”  These include Philadelphia, PA; Machias, Maine; Newport, Rhode Island; and Whitehall, New York.

There is also no consensus regarding who is the father of the US Navy.  The Naval Historical Center suggests that the Continental Congress of 1775 deserves credit as well as “General Washington, John Barry, John Paul Jones, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and others.”   Clearly success has many fathers, several birthplaces and more than a few birthdays.

I think in the Whitehall version, it’s the brilliant but flawed Benedict Arnold who’s credited with initiating naval operations, building flat-boat cannon platforms to deploy against the Royal Navy. Great museums up that way, all within driving distance of our place at Eagle Lake.
