USS New York sailing for New York

USS-New-YorkSo today, on the US Navy’s birthday, the USS New York, built with slightly over seven tons of steel from the wreckage of the World Trade Center following the attack of 9/11, will sail from the shipyard in New Orleans to New York City where it will be christened near Ground Zero.   Not that anyone is trying to overwork the symbolism here.  No definitely not.

    Well, it’s not enough, I say! quote from NYPost:

    The main passageway has been dubbed Broadway; the ship’s insignia references the NYPD and FDNY, and the ship’s galley, called the Skyline Café, features a blue neon outline of the city, pre-9/11.. Other passageways have been named 34th Street and 42nd Street.

    But the real tie to the city is in the ship’s bow, which is made from about seven and a half tons of steel taken from Ground Zero. The ship is designed to land a 700-member Marine battalion wherever they are needed.

    “Physically, literally and figuratively, that steel leads us every day,” Cmdr. Curtis Jones, a New Yorker, told The NY Post.
