La Boudeuse on scientific mission “Terre-Océan.”
The La Boudeuse sailed recently on a two year international scientific mission named “Terre-Océan.”
The three-master “La Boudeuse” sailed from Fécamp on 21 October 2009 for two years of scientific expedition to South America and Pacific Ocean: a complete research program about biodiversity, climate change and water pollution.
The 42 metre sailboat, built in 1916, will head to the territories of the big South American rivers (the Amazon, Orénoque, Paraná), the channels of Patagonia, and then the islands of the Pacific Ocean (Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia), expecting to round Cape Horn in December, 2010.
On board, 26 scientists will study the biosphere, the global warming, the environmental protection and the sustainable development, while facilitating the cross-cultural dialogue.
In Brazil and in Venezuela, they will estimate the environmental impact of the illegal deforestation or the rubber exploitation, the consequences of the extension of the tourism organized on the Indian territories, or the pollution of rivers with mercury by the gold-diggers, with the purpose of proposing solutions.
Then, the scientists will study the means to protect the isolated islands of Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia, the existence of which could be threatened by the climate change within three or four generations.
