Submarines Lost & Found Part 5 – Japanese Subs in the Pacific Deep

subsAn intriguing article about the rediscovery of two of five Japanese submarines which were captured by American forces at the end of World War II and brought to Pearl Harbor for study. They were subsequently sunk in deep water, in part to avoid having to share any of the technology with the Russian military. One of the subs, an I-201, was capable of 20 knots submerged, making it the fastest diesel electric sub ever in service. The other submarine,  an I-14, was slower but designed to carry two aircraft and was intended to be used for attacks on American cities and the Panama Canal.  The submarines were sunk in 2,600 feet of water.

    I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Hans Van Tilburg, the lead archaeologist on this project. He’s a charming guy, and makes good restaurant recommendations. (Though his estimate of what’s “within walking distance” of the hotel leaves much to be desired — long story.)

    But I grin to myself every time I read the name of his institution, the Hawai‘i Undersea Research Laboratory — HURL.

    HURL would be an apt name for several less than sea-kindly research boats that come to mind.

    Acronyms are great. There was recently a headline in the Christian Science monitor which read, “Irish priest kidnapped in Philippines released by MILF.” MILF in this case was the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
