Galveston’s the Elissa: The Tall Ship of Texas by Kurt Voss

elissaMost of the over 4,000 books in  Arcadia Publishing’s “Images of America” series focus on local histories with extensive photographs of what a town, city or region looked like way back when.  (Not long after my family moved into our 1880s brownstone, Arcadia came out with a book titled “Jersey City”, and I probably spent a week wandering around in my spare moments comparing the photos in the book to my local streets.)

I was very pleased to learn today that one book of the series is dedicated to the iron barque Elissa built in 1877, the “Official Tall Ship of the State of Texas.”  The book titled, appropriately enough, Galveston’s the Elissa: The Tall Ship of Texas was written by Kurt Voss, who began his association with the ship in 1980 as a volunteer foreman during her restoration and would serve as director of the Texas Seaport Museum from 1994 to 2007.   He also helped to establish the Elissa volunteer program, considered by many to be one of the best in the country.   His long association with the ship allowed him access to historic photographs of the ship, including many images which had never previously been published.

Mr. Voss is donating all author royalties from the sale of the new book to the Galveston Historical Foundation to be used for the Elissa’s continued preservation.

The barque Elissa “is not a replica but a survivor. Over her century-long commercial history, she carried cargoes to ports around the world for a succession of owners. Her working life as a freighter came to an end in Piraeus, Greece, where she was rescued from the salvage yard by a variety of ship preservationists who refused to let her die. The story of Elissa’s discovery and restoration by the Galveston Historical Foundation is nothing short of miraculous.”
