Stan Hugill in 1979

Stan Hugill, who was born today in 1906 and died in 1992, is often referred as the “last working shantyman.” He was the shantyman aboard the Jubilee-rigged, lime-juice Cape Horner, Garthpool, the last British commercial sailing ship, which wrecked off the Cape Verde Islands in 1929. In one sense calling Stan merely a shantyman does his memory an injustice. As a singer he was featured in more than ten albums. He was also the author of five books, a nautical artist, a linguist and translator and a syndicated columnist. More than any else he was a bridge to an earlier time. His Shanties from the Seven Seas which features over 400 shanties is a classic. All those who raise their voices to sing the old shanties are in his debt.

    When I was in my twenties, Stan stayed with my wife and I for a few days in the late 70s during a visit to Maine. I drove him to Mystic for a visit he was to make there. The Seaport was putting him up in a motel, but we arrived very late due to a winter storm. The motel only had a room for one so we bunked together. He had tattoos all over his body and we joked about the Queequeg and Ishmael sense to the moment.

    I am researching the story of the Garthpool; I’ve already collected a variety of articles photos and I have made may contacts including relatives of the last crew of the Garthpool. My great grandfather was on the Garthpool on the last voyage; Christopher Bedford ‘Scuppers’ Steel.

    Any help or info anyone may have would be most appreciated. I’d love to discover more anecdotes and details of the crews lives before on and after the Garthpool.
