Ferry Dumai Express Sinks Off Sumatra

November 22, 2009 · Filed Under Current, Ships

Indonesia Ferry SinksLast week we posted about an article in the NZ Herald -”More tragedies just over horizon,” which addressed the poor safety records of Pacific ferries. Unfortunately, the horizon was not very far off. Today a ferry, the Dumai Express, sank in stormy seas off the coast of Karimun island, in between Sumatra and Singapore. Two hundred and forty passengers were saved, while at least 29 are reported to have died and 17 are reported missing.  The ferry’s manifest listed only 228 people aboard, though that figure is obviously unreliable.

Maritime accidents are very common because of tropical storms, and sometimes poor ship maintenance and lax safety enforcement. Authorities must always be prepared. And it’s a good thing that they are doing their best to find everybody.
