SSV Corwith Cramer joins Schooner Roseway in St. Croix

schoonerccThe Sailing School Vessel Corwith Cramer recently arrived in St. Croix as part of 12-week undergraduate ocean education program.   The SSV Corwith Cramer is a 134-foot steel-hulled brigantine operated by the Sea Education Association.

Tall ship calls St. Croix home for the holiday

Eighteen students and the crew of 10 sailed from Woods Hole, Mass., to Dominica before arriving at St. Croix to spend Thanksgiving week on the island, as they have for about the past eight years.

The Schooner Roseway is also in port in St. Croix, for her 3rd season.  Operated by World Ocean School, the schooner offers public day sails and private charters as well as educational programs on board for the island’s junior high students.

    The Cramer is a fantastic vessel. I had the opportunity to sail on her for a brief time when I was a student at SEA back in the late 80s and the Cramer was virtually new. It’s hard to think of her as the grand dame of the SEA vessels now.

    Most of my time at SEA was spent as a student aboard the Westward, the school’s original 125-ft staysail schooner. Our track was very similar to the Cramer’s this year except, at the time, we ended our passage in St. Thomas just in time for Thanksgiving. I enjoyed several other brief day cruises on the Cramer in the last 90s and 2000 as a member of the SEA alumni committee as we helped raise funds to build the Westward’s eventual replacement, the Robert C. Seamans.

    I can’t recommend SEA highly enough for students who are seeking an academically challenging ocean-going experience.
