Of Clipper Ships and Pandas – Wang Wang and Funi versus the City of Adelaide

December 16, 2009 · Filed Under Current, History, Lore of the Sea, Ships

pandaIt all comes down to priorities. The world’s oldest composite clipper ship, the City of Adelaide, is about to be broken up in Scotland because no one has come forward with the necessary funds to move the ship to even a temporary berth.  At the same time, the ship’s namesake, the City of Adelaide, Australia has just spent $35 million to build a giant panda enclosure for two pandas on loan from China.   The new panda enclosure opened this weekend to much fanfare and non-stop news coverage.  The two pandas, Wang Wang and Funi, appeared quite happy in their new home.

adelaidebowThe plight of the clipper ship City of Adelaide has not been entirely ignored.  An article in Adelaide Now argued that  the ship should be saved.

The readers comments, however, may tell the story. Even as the ship is on the verge of destruction, only slightly more than half of the 40 comments support preservation (57% to 43% at my last count). As one commenter opined, “Who cares. We’ve got the pandas.”

As noted in a previous post, roughly one in five South Australians descended from passengers who arrived on the clipper ship, City of Adelaide.    Nevertheless, pandas are obviously more popular than clippers ships.

My ancestors are from Scotland and Ireland. I am proud of those who are trying to save the Clipper Ship City of Adelaide. The Australians are the best by far when trouble comes around. My father told me of the heroic fighting they did in WWII. I have had the honor of meeting some of them on trips to Europe. I am an American. Thank God for the Australians in our time of need.
