Exhibition celebrates Aberdeen’s shipbuilding heritage

Aberdeen Maritime Museum currently has an exhibit featuring the last Aberdeen shipbuilder; Hall, Russell & Co; founded in 1864 which finally closed in 1992.  The firm was a partnership between James and William Hall, Thomas Russell, a Glasgow engineer, and John Cardno Couper of Sussex. Initially the company built engines and boilers but in 1868 produced its first ship, the iron steamer Kwang Tung. James and William Hall were the sons of  Alexander Hall, founder of the Alexander Hall and Co. shipyard, which the two sons ran after their father’s death in 1849.  They built numerous famous sailing ships including the barque Ellisa. Exhibition celebrates city’s shipbuilding heritage

ABERDEEN’S rich shipbuilding heritage is being celebrated in a new exhibition at the city’s Maritime Museum.

Established in 1864, Hall Russell and Company built ships of every kind in its yards, from yachts and fishing trawlers to chemical tankers and warships.

In 1971 the company delivered the largest ship built in Aberdeen, the 10,700-tonne cargo vessel Thameshaven, for a Rotterdam owner.

The last of the Aberdeen shipbuilders closed in 1992 after more than a century at the heart of the city’s industrial life. Now generations of former workers have been reunited to recount their memories of the world-renowned firm. Their stories of life in the shipyard have been captured in recordings made specially for the exhibition, and are accompanied by objects from the collections at Aberdeen Maritime Museum.
