Interesting news from Tromsø University. In January they will  begin construction of a 35 meter Viking longship.   The ship will set sail for its first voyage in 2013.

The Dragon Harald Fairhair – the Largest Viking Ship Built in Modern Times

In January 2010 we will start construction of The Dragon Harald Fairhair in Haugesund, Western Norway.

This dragon ship is named after Harald Fairhair, the king who unified Norway into one kingdom, and it will be built close to Harald Fairhair’s Royal Residence at Avaldsnes, Norway.

The ship is built of oak. It will be 114 feet long and 27 feet wide. The displacement will be 70 ton. With a 3200 square feet sail of silk it will be worthy of a king.

The Dragon Harald Fairhair will have 25 pairs of oars. It is necessary to have at least two men on each oar to row the ship efficiently. That will give a crew of at least 100 persons.

Norway’s leading expertise in traditional boat building and the square sail is engaged in development and construction of the ship. The construction is an experimental archaeological research program, and our aim is to recreate a ship with the superb seaworthiness that characterized the ocean going long ships in the Viking Age.

The Dragon Harald Fairhair will be a ship that will combines the excellent sailing characteristics of ocean going ships with the war ships usage of oars.

To achieve this we use all available sources. This includes:

  • Archaeological material
  • Traditional boats along the Norwegian coast, which have continued the Viking ships’ design and characteristics through the generations.
  • The Saga literature and other sources from the Old Norse literature.
  • Foreign contemporary sources from the Viking Age
  • Visual expressions of Viking ships
  • Old sailing records, purchasing lists, reports, and more.

Feasibility studies for construction of the Viking ship has taken approximately 1 year. The studies include high-tech computer simulation with supercomputers, as well as traditional testing with test boats.

When the ship is finished it will spend most of the time at sea. The Dragon Harald Fairhair will sail in the keel water of the Vikings; from the coast of America to the Black Sea. It will be used to recapture the maritime knowledge of the Vikings, and to disseminate this knowledge further

We will invite people from all countries in the world to make applications to be crew members.

Interesting comparison with the Greek Trireme OLYMPIAS — slightly shorter length with about 30% less oarsmen (not sure of the exact number on the trireme but it was around 130). This would reflect a sturdier structure more adapted for sail than oars. Nevertheless, a crude calculation of displacment-length ratio gives a number under 50, an ultralight by any standard. (Crude becasue neither length nor displacement is clearly defined as to whether it’s waterline or overall, or light, standard, or full load.)

There’s no direct parent from the Viking Age cited, another very interesting fact.
