Yitzhak Aharonovitch: captain of the the Holocaust survivor ship Exodus
As captain of the passenger ship Exodus, Yitzhak Aharonovitch played a crucial role in an event that came to symbolise the Jewish struggle for a homeland. In 1947 the Exodus left France for Palestine — then governed by British mandate — with 4,515 survivors of the Holocaust on board, but as it neared the port of Haifa, British naval forces surrounded it and opened fire, killing three people.
With the decision made to surrender — one that Aharonovitch opposed — the passengers were relocated, interned first in Cyprus and then a former Nazi camp. The significance of this was not lost on a watching world already sympathetic to the Zionist cause after the horrors of the Second World War, and within a year the independent state of Israel had been declared. The ship was later immortalised in Leon Uris’s book Exodus and Otto Preminger’s film of the same name.
Yitzhak (Ike) Aharonovitch (Arrane), captain of the Holocaust survivor ship Exodus, was born on August 27, 1923. He died on December 23, 2009, aged 86

I read Uris’ book years ago, and never thought once about the man who captained the Exodus. I wouldn’t have known he’d passed if you hadn’t posted it. Thanks for that obituary.
