Collision in Mumbai – INS Vindhyagiri & MV Nordlake

MV Nordlake

Mumbai can be tough on container ships. Last August the bulk carrier Khalijia 3 steered into the containership MSC Chitra , sinking her, causing a significant spill and closing the port for five days.    Yesterday, the  Indian warship, INS Vindhyagiri and Cyprus-flagged container vessel, MV Nordlake, collided head-on in Mumbai Harbor.  No casualties or oil spill was reported but this time the warship got the worst of it.  It is reported to have capsized after catching fire.  An investigation of the collision has been launched by the Directorate General of Shipping.   The Jewaharlal Nehru Port Trust blamed the collision on naval personnel.

  1. German Merchant ship, was involved. German defence Minister willing to sell 126 Euro Fighters to India and wanted to go from India to Pakistan and sell defence products to them as well. German civilians are for “No War” at home ground but sell defence product to all big and small nations. Germany defence export nation behind US and Russia. Indian Tax payers will have to bear the loss of Navy warship INS Vindhyagiri and then buy products from Germany to keep German living standard high.

  2. My comments are based on a video clip which showed full length of Container ship with Warship close to her stem. It seemed that the fore and aft line of the Warship was almost perpendicular to the fore and aft line of the Container ship. As the Container ship was fully to the starboard side of the Warship, the Warship had to keep clear of the Container ship. The Commentator in the video clip had announced that the collision had taken place close to the Sunk Rock Light House and as the Container ship was outward bound and would be close to the Sunk Rock Light House, it is not understood as to why the Warship seems to be crossing the outward going channel at right angles. Warship had many civilians on board, who had to be landed probably inside the Naval Base and for approaching any berth inside Naval area it is better to go around the Middle Ground. It is regrettable that the highest Naval Authority made a statement that Container ship was at fault without verifying the facts, by doing so the Navy fails to learn any lessons from mistakes made.
