America’s Cup to be sailed in San Francisco in 2013

The 34th America’s Cup races will be sailed in San Francisco bay in 2013.   San Francisco  beat out Newport and an unnamed Italian port city.  This will be the first time that America’s Cup races will be hosted by the city by the bay and and the first time in 15 years that the races have been held in the US.

  1. One thing we can be sure of — any sailboat race held in San Francisco will have the most important commodity — wind, and likely lots of it. Let’s hope the frail-looking ultralight multihulls and crews are up to it. Even if they aren’t, it should be good entertainment to watch the too-light components blow up.

  2. You are exactly right. As much as I like Newport, RI, the light summer winds can make for terrible racing. San Francisco bay has wind to spare. It should make for exciting racing.
