Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz, First Woman to Lead Military Academy

Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz has been named as the 40th Superintendent of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Ct.  She is the first woman to lead one of the nation’s five military service academies.

New leader takes the helm at Coast Guard Academy

Stosz is a 1982 graduate and a member of the third graduating class that included female cadets. She previously was the Coast Guard’s director of reserve and leadership, and also commanded two cutters during her 12 years of experience at sea.

The academy has about 1,030 cadets in its four-year program. Students graduate with a bachelor of science degree and an obligation to serve five years in the Coast Guard.

  1. Congratulations! I was a SPAR from 1943-45, serving as a recuiter in Chicago. All the officers with whom I worked were from the big Eastern schools, while we with degrees from lesser places were not considered! It is great to see women getting a fair shake–i,.e., academy!!! One other thing–I noticed that at that time there was always some reason why black women did not make it thorugh the recruiting process.

    I have reached the age of 90–I’ve seen some changes made!!

  3. congrats rear admiral Stosz, i am a former CG reservist from Pt Allerton (1971). my daughter is currently attending Massachusetts Maritime Academy and wants to join the Coast Guard upon Graduation.
