Colour on the Thames – 1935

A fascinating short film dating from 1935. From the notes: This film is tricky to describe: is it a boat study, a film-poem, an experiment, a picture postcard? One thing is certain: it’s a rare colour snapshot of the Thames and London in the 1930s – and it looks quite magical.

Wonderful…there will always be an England, and it will always have a bustling, commercial harbor in the heart of its capital. It was fascinating to see a glimpse of the gentler, quieter England before the war, powered by coal and steam (and sometimes, sail still hanging on). The ships look different today but they are doing the same things — tugs moving ships and barges around, deckhands handling lines, oceangoing ships making their departure downstream. They’ll go on doing that, as they did through the Great Depression era shown in the video, for as long as civilization lasts. And somehow the musical accompaniment struck just the right Classicizing, wistful tone.
