Continuing her epic voyage around the globe, the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa will officially make her arrival in New York harbor on Sunday, June 5th. She will dock at North Cove Marina in Manhattan on the Hudson River at 9:00 a.m., followed by an Arrival Ceremony with Native Americans and local officials. The event will feature cultural performances by Native American tribes and hula hālau (troupes) from New York. Events will continue throughout the following week.  

On June 7th at 7PM at the American Museum of Natural History in the Hayden Planetarium Space Theater, there will be a presentation of “He Lani Ko Luna, (A Sky Above): An Evening with the Navigators of the Hōkūleʻa Worldwide” Voyage. Hōkūleʻa captain and navigator Chad Kālepa Baybayan and apprentice navigator Celeste Manuia Haʻo will introduce the art of wayfinding the ocean with a system of non-instrument navigation and share their knowledge that “in losing sight of the land, you discover stars.” Click here to learn more.

On June 9th at 7:30 the Patagonia store in SoHo will host a free presentation, “Hōkūleʻa Storytellers Evening” in NYC, where master navigator Kalepa Baybayan and crewmembers will share stories of their maritime adventures while traveling around the globe.

On June 11th at the Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge at Pier 26 on the Hudson River, the Hōkūleʻa and her crew will welcome the public to tour the canoe and participate in educational programming. The free festival is part of the Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge that hosts one of the most competitive outrigger canoe races in the world.
