And They’re Off — 29 Sailors Set Sail in Vendée Globe

vendeegToday, 29 sailors set off from Les Sables-d’Olonne, France in the eighth Vendée Globe single-handed round-the-world yacht race. The 24,000 mile circumnavigation will be sailed non-stop and without assistance along the clipper route: down the Atlantic Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope; then clockwise around Antarctica, keeping Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn to port; then back to Les Sables d’Olonne.  The race is considered by many to be the ultimate in ocean racing.

The race is sailed every four years. The current competitors include sailors from 10 nations, although the race is dominated by the French, who are sailing 20 of the boats competing this year.

The competitors are sailing in IMOCA 60 class boats. The great innovation in this race is that many of the boats have foils which are expected to increase the overall average speeds, provided that they do not fail in the more challengeing section of the Southern Ocean.  See our post from last May, Safran IMOCA 60 with the Dali Moustache — Foil User Manual.

The current record, set in the last Vendée Globe 2012-2013, is 78 days 2 hours 16 minutes.
