BAP Unión, Peru’s New Navy Sail Training Ship Commissioned

In December of 2012, we posted about the keel laying for the Peruvian Navy’s sail training ship at the Marine Industrial Services (SIMA) shipyard in Callao. Last month, the new four-masted barque, BAP (Buque Armada Peruana) Unión was commissioned. The ship will set approximately 4,324 m2 of sail and has a complement of 250 officers and trainees. The BAP Unión is the largest sail training ship in Latin America.

BAP Unión, Peru’s New Navy Sail Training Ship Commissioned — 2 Comments

  1. Another beautiful vessel to join the ranks of Tall Ships all over the world.
Has anyone heard of any update on the hull of the old Clipper Ship “City of Adelaide” which was shipped from Scotland to Australia on a heavy lift ship.
The last photos I saw of her showed her in pretty poor condition and would require megabucks to restore!

  2. Actually Peru was the last South American nation to acquire a tall ship. Starting in 2010 with the celebration of the bicentennial of the independence of both Argentina and Chile, tall ships from Latin American nations get together every four years in a Brazilian port to sail around the Cape of Horn, north along the Pacific Coast of South America, through the Panama Canal, the Caribbean and finishing in the port of Veracruz in Mexico after more than four months of sailing. In 2018 the BAP Union will be joining the Capitan Miranda, Cisne Branco, Cuauhtemoc, Esmeralda, Gloria, Guayas, Libertad and Simon Bolivar in this great event. The following are two beautiful videos from the 2014 Velas Latinoamerica event crossing the Cape of Horn and arriving to Santo Domingo.

Even though the BAP Union was deigned to sail using wind power it also has a diesel engine allowing her to attain a maximum speed of 12 knots. It also has a bow thruster and a variable pitch propeller for easy maneuvering in port as well as a state of the art navigational equipment. Currently this vessel is undergoing its sea trials leading to her final certification by GL.
