Shipping of Nuclear Waste Approved on the Great Lakes

Bruce Power nuclear power plant Ontario

Last Friday, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved a plan for Bruce Power to ship 1,600 tonnes of radioactive waste,  in the form of 16 decommissioned nuclear reactors,  across the Great Lakes, though the St. Lawrence Seaway and across the Atlantic Ocean to Sweden for recycling.    The plan faces considerable Canadian and international opposition.   Members of the Canada’s nuclear regulator and representatives of Bruce Power are expected to be called before a Canadian Commons committee to be grilled over plans to ship used the used radioactive generators through the Great Lakes.

  1. The Candadians are no more confused that those of us a bit further South, not that that is setting the bar too high. I recall seeing everyone from cabinet officers, to bureaucrats, diplomats and generals being grilled before US Congressional Committees.

Lots of hot air on either side of the border.

  2. True however Canadian has a Parliamentray system like UK. We have the Committee System before going the floor of Congress so the hot air does have some purpose. In Canada it would appears to be a PR type justification of an unpopular CNSC decision.
    Good Watch.
