Heritage Wins Honors in Maine’s 42nd Annual Great Schooner Race

On July 6th, 11 schooners raced from Gilkey Harbor in Islesboro, Maine on Penobscot Bay to the finish line at the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse in the 42nd Annual Great Schooner Race, sponsored by the Maine Windjammer Association.  The race honors, as reported by Village Soup–Knox, went to:

  • Cutty Sark Award: first overall, Heritage, captained by Doug and Linda Lee, out of Rockland.
  • Coaster Class: first place, Stephen Taber, captained by Noah Barnes, out of Rockland; second place, Grace Bailey, captained by Christopher Trandell, out of Camden; and third place, Lewis R. French, captained by Garth Wells, out of Camen.
  • Leeward Class: first place, Heritage, captained by Doug and Linda Lee, out of Rockland; second place, J&E Riggin, captained by Jon Finger and Annie Mahle, out of Rockland; and third place, Angelique, captained by Dennis Gallant, out of Camden.
  • Windward Class: first place, American Eagle, captained by John Foss, out of Rockland; second place, Mary Day, captained by Barry King, out of Camden; and third place, Ladona, captained by J.R. Braugh, out of Rockland.

Additional awards included:

  • The Spirit of ’53 Award, recognizing guest involvement and seamanship during the Great Schooner Race, went to the three-masted Victory Chimes, captained by Kip Files, out of Rockland.
  • The Boyd Guild Award, named after the colorful Captain Boyd Guild and recognizing navigational excellence, went to the Tree of Life, captained by Paul Morse, out of Newport, R.I.
