Man at Sea — Iain Percy

Man at Sea is one of Alfred Dunhill’s ‘Portraits of Achievement‘. It is five years old, but new to me.

Man at Sea is an ode to the sea and one man’s life long passion for sailing on it, following Iain Percy OBE, British sailor and Olympic Champion. Setting sail from Lymington in the New Forest district of Hampshire in the yacht Strega, Iain tackles the wind and the waves on The Solent strait between the Isle of Wight and the mainland England.

The boat suddenly becomes weightless and you’re surfing. You almost become mesmerised as you catch the next wave and the wave after

  1. What a shame that someone has taken what looks to be a rather nice old classic boat — a day sailor — and added a modern rig and sails. Further the commentary is a total and perfect load of codswallop. If the young man (who looks like an angry young man) with a very cavalier attitude has that disdain and almost contempt for the ocean he has no business to be out there. Particularly in a boat with a big open cockpit I am so not impressed.

  2. The yacht is a modern classic made by Spirit yachts using cedar/fibreglass construction.

But I do agree with you as someone who sails on the Solent on top level yachts, what a load of complete and utter nonsense.

  3. I just enjoy the videography. His perspective is of a professional racing sailor, views I essentially ignore. I agree that the carbon fiber sails and the traditional style boat can be a bit jarring.
